Lockdown Drill

• California Assembly Bill 1858 (Safe and Prepared Schools Act) is a new law that requires California schools to inform parents and guardians in advance when lockdown drills are scheduled. It also requires schools to provide links to resources, including mental health supports and community organizations focused on reducing violence.
  
  In accordance with AB 1858, we are notifying parents and guardians that our school will be conducting a lockdown drill on Tuesday, September 29th, 2025 at 10:40am. The drill will last approximately 20 minutes and is an important part of our ongoing efforts to ensure the safety and preparedness of our students and staff.

• Opt-Out Option
  If you prefer that your child not participate in the drill, you may opt them out by arranging to drop them off at our front office at 11:00am (after the drill has concluded**).  Please notify Kathy Sills at KathySills@iusd.org if you plan to opt your child out of this drill.  "Opting out" and arriving at 11:00 will have no negative impact on attendance.    
  **Note - We will NOT be available to provide an “opt out” area for students on campus during this time because the schoolwide lockdown system will be activated.  There is no place on campus for students to avoid (not hear) the lockdown announcements taking place. This is why parents wanting to “opt out” must supervise their children off campus until the drill has concluded.

• What to Expect

  1. This drill is designed to help our school community practice safety procedures in a calm and supportive manner.

  2. Students and staff will receive an announcement immediately before the drill begins and immediately after it ends.  We ensure that all students and staff understand that this is a drill and there is NO threat on campus. We then “arm” our lockdown system, which automatically locks a number of entry points on campus and begins to make an automated announcement to “lock down.”  Teachers are with their class and guide students on how to position themselves. Teachers use developmentally appropriate terminology when speaking with students before, during, and after the drill.  While classes are in “lockdown,” designated staff members monitor the drill, both outside and inside of the buildings.

  3. After the drill, an announcement is made to ensure all students/staff know the drill is over, and all parents/guardians will receive a follow-up notification confirming its completion.
